2017 Top Ten Most Fuel Efficient Light Vehicles

According to the Fueleconomy.gov website, the list of the top ten most fuel efficient light vehicles includes nine electric vehicles (EV) and one plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle (PHEV).  Electric vehicle fuel economy is measured in miles per gallon equivalent, or MPGe, where 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity is equal to one gallon of gasoline. DOE Announces $15 Million to Accelerate the Deployment of Energy Efficient Transportation Technologies

Today, December 21, 2016, the Energy Department (DOE) announced $15 million, subject to appropriations, to support community-based projects to accelerate the adoption of advanced and alternative fuel vehicles and demonstrate energy efficient mobility systems including connected and autonomous vehicles as well as new transportation system models.

Question of the Month: How is fuel economy determined and reported for alternative fuel vehicles?

Answer: Last month we learned about how the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determines and reports conventional light-duty vehicle fuel economy ratings. While alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) fuel economy testing is largely similar to that of conventional fuels, the EPA makes some adjustments to account for different vehicle technology and fuel energy content. By tailoring AFV fuel economy testing and reporting, the EPA is able to provide apples-to-apples comparisons and allow consumers to make informed decisions.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has installed six charging stations for its six new all-electric Nissan LEAFs. A mural was painted on a building behind the stations in UAB colors to recognize the charging area!

Tesla Chargers Now at Uptown in Birmingham

 

Alabama Power has supported the expansion of emission-free electric vehicles for many years, where it makes sense for our customers,” said Alabama Power Market Specialist Robin White.  “We’re excited to work with the BJCC and Tesla to further expand access to electric vehicle charging in the Birmingham area.”

White said electric vehicle technology is becoming more widely adopted by auto manufacturers and drivers, with over 470,000 plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) sold worldwide, 34 new PEVs entering the market and Tesla’s sales projection of 500,000 vehicles by 2018.
